The 5-Minute Reset Every Manager Needs (But Rarely Takes)
You don’t need more time to be a better manager. You need small moments where you’re actually present.
As a manager you need to give yourself space to think. You move from meeting to meeting. Conversation to conversation. Decision to decision.
In all this quick movement you’re also carrying:
- expectations from leadership
- the needs of your team
- your own workload
- and everything in between
And somewhere in all of that… you have no time to pause.
This is a problem because it can lead you to react instead of respond. You rush through conversations instead of listen. You never get a moment to pause and process.
You’re not doing anything wrong — you just haven’t built the habit and space to do it differently.
This is where the 5-minute reset comes in.
Not a big process. Not another system to manage. Just an intentional pause.
You can do it before your next meeting, conversation, or before kicking off your week.
Ask yourself:
Self-awareness
- How might my own stress or assumptions be showing up right now?
- How do I want to show up in this next interaction?
Clarity
- Does my team actually know what matters most right now?
- Are expectations and priorities clear?
Connection
- Do people feel supported and understood?
- When was the last time I really listened — without rushing?
Accountability
- Am I addressing issues directly and fairly?
- Am I following through on what I’ve said matters?
Safety
- Do people feel comfortable speaking up or asking for help?
- Is anyone holding back that I need to check in with?
None of these questions are complicated. But they are absolutely the difference between:
- reacting and leading
- moving fast and moving intentionally
- managing tasks and managing people
Here’s the reality:
You don’t need more time to be a better manager. You need small moments where you’re actually present — and small moments that allow you to complete the processing cycle.
Because how you show up becomes your team’s environment. If you’re always pushing through and never resetting or centering yourself, you might be having unintended negative ripples out to your team.
If you can pause — even for five minutes — you’re already ahead of most managers. And you’ll help yourself and your team out more than you think.
If you want to make this easier to actually use, I created a simple, printable version: The 5-Minute Manager Reset — free to download. Keep it open on your desk, pull it up before meetings, or use it when things feel off. Try it before your next conversation.
