From Processes to People: A Connection-Driven Approach to Management

Traditional management was built for the industrial age. The work people are doing now needs something different — connection, not just process.

In the fast-paced, ever-evolving world of business, traditional management styles often prioritize processes, procedures, and efficiency over human connection. However, this approach is quickly becoming antiquated — with its origins dating back to the industrial age — and it can lead to a lack of engagement, decreased productivity, and at times a toxic work environment due to the neglect of the human reality of business.

To foster a thriving and innovative organization, managers must shift their focus from processes to connection.

The limitations of process-driven management

While processes are essential for maintaining order and consistency, an overemphasis on them can stifle creativity, innovation, and employee morale. When managers become overly focused on adhering to strict rules and procedures, they may neglect the unique needs and perspectives of their team members.

This can lead to a sense of disengagement, as employees feel like they are merely cogs in a machine rather than valued contributors.

Building human connection: a key to success

To create a positive and productive work environment, managers must prioritize building human connections with their team members. This involves:

  • Active listening — truly understanding the thoughts, feelings, and concerns of employees is crucial for building trust and rapport.
  • Empathy — putting yourself in the shoes of your team members and showing that you care about their well-being.
  • Vulnerability — understanding that emotional openness, risk-taking, trust, and imperfection are all realities of the human experience, and that’s true in the business environment too.
  • Radical transparency — acknowledging that a lack of information and perspective creates a negative environment run by false truths and disinformation.
  • Flexibility — the nature of our world and how and where work can be done has drastically shifted. So has the ability to adapt work to enable people to work at their most effective times. The world is changing; flexibility is a huge driver of commitment and connection.
  • Advocacy — employees will perform highly when they know they are being supported fully. Understand what drives your employees and connect into ways to advocate for them to engage in those motivations.
  • Follow-through — big words fall flat. Consistent actions drive outcomes, connection, and loyalty.

Benefits of a people-focused approach

By shifting their focus from processes to people, managers can reap benefits, including:

  • Increased employee engagement and satisfaction — employees who feel valued and supported are more likely to be motivated and productive.
  • Improved team performance — when team members feel connected and empowered, they are more likely to collaborate effectively and achieve their goals.
  • Enhanced innovation — a culture of open communication and trust fosters creativity and innovation.
  • Reduced turnover — when employees feel valued and appreciated, they are less likely to seek employment elsewhere.
  • Healthier selves and healthier teams — connection builds safety. Mental well-being is improved all around with a people-focused approach.

A balanced approach

While building human connection is essential, it’s important to note that processes still play a vital role in organizations. The key is to find a balance between the two. By prioritizing people while also ensuring that processes are in place to support efficiency and effectiveness, managers can create a thriving and sustainable work environment.

As the business landscape continues to evolve, managers must adapt their approach to leadership. By shifting their focus from processes to people, they can create a more engaging, productive, and innovative workplace. By building human connection, managers can foster a sense of belonging, trust, and collaboration — ultimately leading to greater success for both individuals and organizations.
