In the fast-paced, ever-evolving world of business, traditional management styles often prioritize processes, procedures, and efficiency over human connection. However, this approach is quickly becoming antiquated with its origination dated back to the industrial age, and it can lead to a lack of engagement, decreased productivity, and at times a toxic work environment due to the neglect of the human reality and its connection to business results and outcomes. To foster a thriving and innovative organization, managers must shift their focus from processes to connection.

The Limitations of Process-Driven Management

While processes are essential for maintaining order and consistency, an overemphasis on them can stifle creativity, innovation, and employee morale. When managers become overly focused on adhering to strict rules and procedures, they may neglect the unique needs and perspectives of their team members. This can lead to a sense of disengagement, as employees feel like they are merely cogs in a machine rather than valued contributors.

Building Human Connection: Foundational to Success

To create a positive and productive work environment, managers need to prioritize building human connections with their team members. This involves:

  • Active listening: Truly understanding the thoughts, feelings, and concerns of employees is crucial for building trust and rapport.

  • Empathy: Putting yourself in the shoes of your team members and showing that you care about their well-being.

  • Vulnerability: Understanding that emotional openness, risk-taking, trust and imperfection are all realities to the human experience, and that is true in the business environment as well.

  • Radical Transparency: Acknowledging that a lack of information and perspective will create a negative environment that is run by false truths and disinformation.  The more information and transparency people have, the more clarity, commitment and connected they feel.

  • Flexibility: The nature of our world and how and where work can be done has drastically shifted. As has the ability to adapt work to enable people to work at their most effective times and locations. The world is changing, flexibility is a huge driver of output.

  • Advocacy – Employees will perform highly when they know they are being supported fully. Understand what drives your employees and connect into ways to advocate for them to engage in those motivations.

  • Follow-through. Big words fall flat. People see through the buzz-words and the corporate strategy lingo. Consistent actions drive outcomes, connection and loyalty.  Put more energy into your action than your words, how do you make them feel?

Benefits of a People-Focused Approach

By shifting their focus from processes to people, managers can reap big benefits, including:

  • Increased employee engagement and satisfaction: Employees who feel valued and supported are more likely to be motivated and productive.

  • Improved team performance: When team members feel connected and empowered, they are more likely to collaborate effectively and achieve their goals.

  • Improved team performance = improved manager performance. The better your team performs the better you perform as a manager.

  • Enhanced innovation: A culture of open communication and trust fosters creativity and innovation.

  • Reduced turnover: When employees feel valued and appreciated, they are less likely to seek employment elsewhere.

  • Healthier selves and healthier teams: Connection builds safety. Mental well-being is improved all around with a people-focused approach.  We all have to work, let's try to make it a healthy experience.

Balance your Approach

While building human connection is essential, it is important to note that processes still play a vital role in organizations. The key is to find a balance between the two. By prioritizing people while also ensuring that processes are in place to support efficiency and effectiveness, managers can create a thriving and sustainable work environment.

As the business landscape continues to evolve, managers must adapt their approach. By shifting their focus from overly weighted on processes to an increased focus on people, they can create a more engaging, productive, effective and ultimately high-performing workplace. By building human connection, managers can foster a sense of belonging, trust, and collaboration, ultimately leading to greater success for both individuals and organizations
